St Mary's Welwyn wanted to heat a new Church Hall and the Historic
Church sustainably.
This led David Gregory and his colleague Peter Brook to explore renewable
options. Their in-depth research on the subject led them to the conclusion
they should opt for DX Ground Source Heat Pumps.
Boreholes were drilled
in the churchyard, and the heat pumps were installed in the boiler room in
the basement of the church. The heat pumps provide hot water to the under
floor heating in the new hall and also to the existing cast iron radiators in
the church itself. The use of this type of radiator is not normally
recommended with heat pumps but, in this case, the desire not to disturb the
existing church plumbing over-rode the need for the highest performance.
